- Symbolism: The placer mining pan, an engineer's
tool suggested by the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 49th Infantry
Division, refers to the unit's descent, while the embattlements
denote fortifications either built or demolished. The sun and
sword refer to the motto, with the sword relating to leadership
and the sun to light. The pan and sun are used to symbolize the
golden state of California and the scroll simulates the Sacramento
River around Redding, the unit's home area.
