Camp Fauntleroy
 
Special Orders Number 79, dated August 6, 1856, and received November 13, 1856, directed Major George Blaker, 1st Dragoons, with Companies F, H, and I (217 soldiers) to proceed first to Fort Tejon in southern Kern County, and then to the site selected for the temporary establishment of Camp Faunderoy, where the troops arrived on November 29, 1856. It was named Colonel Thomas T. Fauntleroy, who commanded Fort Tejon from May to August 1857. He later left the 1st Dragoons for a command in the Confederate States Army as Brigadier General, Virginia State Forces.
