- Established on January 10, 1862, this
Shorl lived post was located at Bucksport, now a part of the
city of Eureka in Humboldt County. Established in compliance
with the orders of Colonel Francis l. Lippitt, cornmanding the
District of Humboldt, for whom the camp was named, it was garrisoned
by the 2nd California Infantry, Captain
Douglas cornmanding. The post, set up because of the lack of
adequate facilities at Fort Humboldt to accommodate the augmented
command, consisted entirely of rented buildings and lasted for
only two months
