- Sometime in May 1862 the
people in the small settlement ol Elk Camp, about 15 miles northeast
of Camp Anderson in Humboldt County, urgently requested
government military protection. Sparse archival records and
other sources indicate that a temporary post, garrisoned from
Camp Anderson, was probably established within the settlement.
