Camp at Fremont Peak

On Gabilan Peak (now known as Fremont Peak), Captain John C. Fremont built a hasty fortification of logs and earth in 1846, expecting stiff resistance from Mexican Californios. After four days, when the battle did not materialize, he broke camp and left for Oregon. The State of California now maintains Fremont Peak State Park, south of of the mission town of San Juan Bautista in San Benito County.
