- The sandbagged warehouse converted in
1856 to the use of the San Francisco Vigilantes as its armory
and drill hall, Fort Vigilance, popularly nicknamed Fort Gunnybags,
also served as the dictatorial group's headquarters The vigilantes
were ostensibly organized to establish law and order within
the city, but they disbanded when it was determined that they
were much worse than the supposed offenders. The site of the
pseudo fort in San Francisco is on Sacramento Street, bounded
by Front, Davis and California Streets.
