Distinctive Unit Insignia
 
Description: A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned as follows: Per pale Azure and Gules, an isosceles triangle Sable surmounted by another reversed Azure (Dark Blue) bearing another of the third; on a chief per fess Or and of the third, four saltires conjoined counterchanged. Attached below a Black tripartite scroll inscribed “HOLD THE LINE” in Gold.
 
Symbolism: Blue and red signify the colors of the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s shoulder sleeve insignia. Black refers to constancy of the unit to complete each mission. The triangles suggest the four companies of the Battalion interlocking in support of the Brigade, also representing the interlocking fields of fire formed in a Base Defense Cluster. The counterchanged fess and saltires suggest barbed wire, symbolizing the Battalion’s physical security function; each saltire illustrates the Roman numeral “X” for the number “10,” alluding to the unit designation “40.”
 
Background: The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 21 August 2008.

Blazon:
Shield: Per saltire Teal and Or, on a lozenge of the second edged of the first between in chief three lightning bolts, two in pile and the middle palewise of the second, in fess two trench knives erect Sable, the finger grips inward and in base a representation of an Aztec pyramid Argent (Eggshell), a wadjet of the third.
Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the California Army National Guard: From a wreath Or and Teal Blue, the setting sun behind a grizzly bear passant on a grassy field all Proper.
Motto: HOLD THE LINE.
 
Symbolism:
Shield: Teal is the color traditionally associated with Branch Unassigned. The saltire suggests military determination. Black denotes power. The trench knives illustrate the 1918 Mark I knife, symbolizing the warrior spirit and close combat. The lightning bolts represent speed and the unit’s electronic communications and warfare capabilities. The wadjet, an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection and used by the Egyptians to denote the five senses, denotes the advance sensory and intelligence gathering functions of the Battalion. The Aztec pyramid signifies the unit’s engineering responsibilities, highlighting the Mexican and Central American heritage of the Engineer Company.
Crest: The crest is that of the California Army National Guard.
 
Background: The coat of arms was approved on 21 August 2008.
