HUFFMAN, Stephan P

I entered the Naval Reserve 18 October 1962 and reported for active duty at the Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI in January 1963. I was commissioned an Ensign in May of that year and attended the U. S. Naval Supply Corps School from May through November.

I reported for duty on the USS Bausell (DD-845) at the end of 1963. She was in the middle of an overhaul and in dry dock. After a shake down cruise and many training exercises we deployed to the Western Pacific. The first and second Tonkin Gulf incidents happened in early August 1964, and after only a few weeks we were in the Tonkin Gulf. We were never attacked. The Bausell did duty at Yankee Station in the South China Sea and on the patrol of the Taiwan Strait. We visited Yokosuka, Subic Bay, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong.

My last year in the Navy I served at Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Fallon, NV. It was a busy place as air squadrons did their final bombing and gunnery training prior to deploying to Vietnam.

I ended my active duty in May 1966.
