- SIECKMAN, Wayne K
"Vietnam", "Desert Storm","
Enduring Freedom" Era Veteran.
After receiving my first college degree
in June of 1966, I received my draft notice in late 1966 and would
have been drafted as of the 22nd of Jan.1967. Instead, I enlisted
on 19 Jan. 1967, RA18844261. (RA=Regular Army). for 3 years. If
I had been drafted I would have received a "US= Draft Number"
I enlisted so that I would be guaranteed at an A.I.T. class at
Ft Leonard Wood, MO. In those days SSN's were not used.
I completed 8 weeks of basic training at
Ft Ord CA. Basic training had its inherent problems One of which
was SPINAL MENINGITIS. We couldn't leave the Company area during
the 8 weeks other than to go to church (across the street), BIVOUAC,
and to the store next to our building.
Basic training had a 5-event P.T. test.
One of the events was the one mile run in which you ran it in
o.d. green fatigues and boots. The mile run was my best ever mainly
because I always ran it under 6:00min. to receive 100 points of
the possible 500 points. We qualified with the M14 rifle. The
gas chamber actually used chlorine gas along with C.S.& C.N.
gases. We threw live hand grenades.
I completed 8 weeks training at Ft. Leonard
Wood, MO. and received my first M.O.S. of 62E10 (bulldozer, scraper
& grader operator). Although I operated all of them, my specialty
was bulldozers. Our class was tasked with removing the trees to
make way for a landing strip at Ft Leonard Wood. The students
could only use two different types dozers (D7 Cator the A.C. 16
both had power shift transmissions). The instructors used the
D8 Cat. With a stick shift transmission mainly because the stick
shift tractors don't get stuck in the mud as easily. Part of our
training was firing the no disposable hand held antitank rocket
launcher (IT WAS A BLAST!)
After receiving approx. 6 mo training CONUSI
received orders for Germany. I completed the remaining 30 mo.
in Germany. I was assigned to the 4th Armor Division (NAME ENOUGH)
H.H.C. 2nd Bde. Erlangen, Germany. When I first arrived in Germany,
with a 62E10 M.O.S., I was told there were no open slots. So...I
had the choice of reenlisting to get assigned to an engineering
unit or get assigned to an armor company. I opted for the second
choice and was retrained in another M.O.S. The first training
I received was in the 4th Armor Div. Admin. Course. After completing
this training I typed DA form 1 "The morning report"
for about 3mo along with other Co. clerk duties. After that I
received training as a P.L.L. clerk in the motor pool. & finally
worked as a wheeled vehicle mechanic 63B & clerk in the motor
pool. After less then two years service I was promoted to SP5
E-5. 63F20 RECOVERY SPEC. I returned home from Europe at Lindbergh
Field San Diego at 1:45p.m. Dec. 31 1969 with a 19-day early out
(early outs are not recommended because the year doesn't count
but points do!). I received my HONORABLE DISCHARGE ON 1st Jan.
1973.
On 19 July 1983 I again enlisted the USAR
728th Trans. Co. Camp Pendleton, Ca as a 63C or now 88L. After
a 13-year break in service I returned as a SP5 E-5 mainly because
of my civilian maintenance background. I was promoted to SFC E-7
before the 728th was disbanded. I then transferred to the 1394th
D.S.B. at Camp Pendleton and received training as a Traffic Mgmt
Coordinator 88N primary M.O.S. & 63B secondary M.O.S.
I was promoted to MSG E-8 in my secondary
M.O.S. of 63B50 hi the 155th Maint. Bn. El Monte, Ca, After one
year at the 155th Maint Bn. I returned to the 1394th DSB &
was activated on 2 Feb2003.
On April 7,2004 my enlistment ended on my
60th birthday and I retired with 26years 8mo. l7days of service.
During my military service I was awarded: (1) Army Achievement
Metal (2) Good Conduct Metal (3) Army Reserve Components Achievement
Metal (4) Armed Forces Reserve Metal with Device (5) NCO Professional
Development Ribbon (6)Army Service Ribbon (7) Overseas Service
Ribbon.
