- Is one of the original members of the
Center for Military History, California State Military Reserve
who founded the California Military Museum, formerly the Citizen
Soldier Museum. First serving as charter docent coordinator
and museum operations officer, he has been actively engaged
in supporting the museum from opening day. Kitchen retired from
the Regular Army with twenty five and a half years of service
which included two and a half years of enlisted duty in the USAR.
A master parachutist, he had a diversified career which included
assignments as airborne platoon leader, Field Office SAC, Army
CIC, Military Advisor, Secretary to Joint Staff, Interpreter
in Japanese, Special Operations Plans Officer, Psychological
Operations Team Leader, and Field Operations Team Chief. Following
retirement, he joined the State Military Reserve and served in
a number of other units and capacities until transferring to
the Center for Military History in 1989. Among other things,
he has led the ceremonial command for a number of years by representing
the Museum and the Military Department at patriotic and other
appropriate ceremonies and events with a number of different
organizations. With over twenty years of volunteer service
to the California Military Department, he continues to participate
where possible, especially in support of the Military Museum.
His combat awards include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air
Medal (two awards) Combat Infantryman's Badge, Vietnam Cross
of Gallantry (two individual awards). Kitchen was also responsible
for the design and adoption of California Military History Medal,
now a permanent part of the state military awards structure
