- A Civil War-period post in Oakland, it
had been established for the training of volunteers before they
were sent east, chiefly to join Colonel Edward Dexter Baker's
71st Pennsylvania Regiment (1st California
Regiment). Other men assigned to the camp found themselves
serving monotonous guard duty at warehouses or on some of the
islands in San Francisco Bay.
